Around Al Hamra and Jebel Shams, dramatic landscapes meet centuries-old villages, winding mountain roads and some of Oman’s most memorable views. And the best part? Trade city streets for mountain views
The drive from Muscat towards Al Hamra is a journey in itself. As the city fades into the distance, the landscape transforms into rugged mountains, deep valleys and vast open skies.
Make your base for the weekend The View Oman, set high above Al Hamra at around 1,400 metres. Here, the mountains aren't simply something you visit they become part of your stay. Wake up to expansive valley views, enjoy a quiet morning on your private balcony or simply spend some time taking in the scenery.
Explore the villages of the Hajar Mountains
A mountain escape is about more than spectacular views. Take a stroll through Misfat Al Abriyyin, one of Oman’s best-known mountain villages, where traditional homes, date palms and ancient falaj irrigation channels create a fascinating glimpse into life in the Hajar Mountains.
Back in Al Hamra, explore the old village and visit Bait Al Safa to learn more about traditional Omani life and customs.
Go higher at Jebel Shams
For those who want a little adventure, continue towards Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest mountain. The dramatic landscape around Wadi Nakhr offers spectacular viewpoints and hiking opportunities, including routes along the famous canyon.
You don't have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the mountains, either. Sometimes, simply finding a viewpoint, breathing in the cool mountain air and watching the landscape stretch into the distance is enough.

Perhaps the best thing about leaving Muscat for the mountains is having nowhere else you need to be.
